Tom Walsh serves up some mysterious and atmospheric sci-fi for Swimming. Based on a short story idea of Tom’s, the video actually comprises of a short edit of a longer, more detailed short film (which you can see here). This tale of ‘The Last Human’ features some impressive special effects, top props and an amazing location all bonded together with a healthy dose of lonely meloncholy. Science Fiction blog io9 picked it up as one their favourite science fiction videos of 2012. Praise indeed!
Tom said: “I had recently written a short film script called The Last Human. The narrative follows the fate last human being left alive – a concept that I have had a long standing fascination with – and their mission to implant DNA on a strange world in an attempt to begin new life in the universe. When I listened to the song I Do (Come True) I immediately felt a connection between the music and the story.
“I had written. The shoot took all of six hours. We camped overnight in South Wales and then after a rainy morning we headed to the beach and got down to it. Shooting in February we had until about 6pm before sundown, at which point we had to carry the 4ft metal sphere and all the kit back up to the van through a muddy forest track.”
